"Hot Knife" by Fiona Apple
"Hot Knife" is a slow-burn build of staccato piano, thunderous timpani, and layered vocals that sounds like nothing else in pop.
Weekly Track
Thoughtfully curated weekly deep dives on a single track worthy of your time and attention (and your hifi gear.)
"Psychedelic Switch" by Carly Rae Jepsen
Audio ice cream with another scoop of ice cream on top. This modern disco track is a killer showcase for vocal expressiveness.
"When the Levee Breaks" by Led Zeppelin
There's nothing like those first four bars of "When the Levee Breaks." It's the foundation of a grimy driving bluesy groove as unstoppable as the tide.
"Lisztomania" by Phoenix
Lisztomania starts with a click and a piano chord, then the whole thing lifts. It's crisp and airy. Nothing is buried. This pop confection rewards a system that can separate midrange detail.
"Wicked Game" by Daisy Gray
Daisy Gray's cover of Wicked Game strips the original to its bones. It's a beautiful dynamics showcase for hifi systems with midrange control and a low noise floor.
"Sledgehammer (2012 Remaster)" by Peter Gabriel
The 2012 remaster of Sledgehammer puts the horn section in your lap. That opening hit is all brass and breath, tight and forward. The texture on the snare is wildly good and never gets lost in the mix.
"Forgot About Dre" by Dr. Dre & Eminem
The crass swagger here is weapons-grade. Synth stabs and high hat ride nimbly on top of an iconic west coast hip-hop bass groove that is equal parts chill and threatening AF.
"The Eye" by Brandi Carlile
The Eye opens with a single acoustic guitar and Brandi Carlile's voice, close, unguarded but supported by a lavish three part harmony.
"Nashville Blues (Live At The American Legion Post 82)" by Billy Strings and Bryan Sutton
"How Do I Make You Love Me?" by The Weeknd
"In The Air Tonight" by Phil Collins
