"Wicked Game" by Daisy Gray

Daisy Gray's cover of Wicked Game strips the original to its bones. It's a beautiful dynamics showcase for hifi systems with midrange control and a low noise floor.

Daisy Gray's cover of Wicked Game strips Chris Isaak's original to its bones. What's left is Daisy's incredible voice control, ambient instrumentation, and plenty of space. The production is appropriately intimate.

Daisy's vocal alternate's between close and breathy, and drowning in reverb. On a system with good midrange control and a quiet noise floor, the details land.

When I worked in a hifi shop and showed this demo track to one of the seasoned salespeople there, she was immediately engaged. Having heard (and grown tired of) all the standards over decades of experience, she made me play this again immediately after the first time through.

Listen for: Obviously the vocal performance is the star, but when the full instrumentation hits around the 1:20 mark the whole thing shifts into another gear. There's a mellow intensity and power that elevates the vocal and fills in the lower register, allowing a complete system to shine.
