Forgot About Dre brings weapons-grade swagger and production value to your stereo. Snare and high hat ride nimbly on top of an iconic west coast hip-hop bass groove that is equal parts chill and threatening AF.

When Forgot About Dre track came out it was like catnip for my then-20-year old brain. I'm older now, less angry, and even more less convinced of my own invincibility. But I am happy to report it still slaps on the hifi system in my living room as well as the factory JBL in my minivan.

Dre and Mel-Man's production on the album "2001" is impossibly clean. The vibe is heavy and focused, deftly weaving Dre's menace and typically crass class clown buffoonery provided by master of the art, Eminem.

Em's verse cuts through the center with his signature dry vocal tone spitting rhymes that are as confrontational and bracing as they are darkly funny. Dre's hooks are unhurried, letting the track breathe.

Keys and strings sit wide across the stereo field. On a system with low-end extension + good fidelity, this track lands like a haymaker. It is peak late-90s West Coast hip hop, and it still sounds like a standard which it is.

Listen for: Layered syncopation of synth ticks and pops with the high hat. On headphones or from a well-sorted main listening position you can follow it left to right. When Eminem comes in, the vocal is dead center and dry. The contrast between that in-your-face lead and the wider bed is a killer one-two punch.
