There are live recordings, and then there is "Keith Don't Go (Live)" by Nils Lofgren. I feel comfortable saying it's the standard for live recording with little dispute.

“Keith Don’t Go (Live)” is what happens when one guitar, one player, and one room fall perfectly into sync. Recorded at the Barns of Wolftrap, Vienna, VA, Jan. 18, 1997. It's a masterclass in acoustics. No overdub. No studio trickery. Just wood, wire, and energy.

At this point, the track is a worn-out standard of audio shows. I first heard it when I was working at a hi-fi store, digging through a junk drawer, and found an old Bowers & Wilkins dealer demo CD. There was a lot of polite jazz (snooze), but then this came on. Lofgren’s acoustic tone is enormous, and the ability to place the sounds across the stage in front of you is undeniable.

To the uninitiated, like me at the time, if you are wondering why you haven't heard Nils Lofgren before... You most certainly have. He spent more than 25 years as a member of Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band (not my bag, but respect) and is a former member of Crazy Horse, best known for performing with Neil Young.

This rendition of “Keith Don’t Go (Live)” is loose and organic. Lofgren stretches phrases, hammers the bass notes for rhythm, and lets harmonics hang in the rafters. As it is with the best live performances, the playing feels conversational. There is a give-and-take with the energy of the crowd.

On a good system, this track is jaw-dropping. You can hear the tension of the strings, the vibration of the guitar body, and the faint scuff of fingertips shifting position. The stereo image is wide and natural, with the guitar dead center and the room stretching out around it. It is a perfect demo for transparency, immediacy, and presence.

Listen for: Gee, there's a lot, but the guitar wizardry at 3:20 is astounding with the way it blooms into the space. There's also the extended vocal notes starting around 5:30 that are hair-raising.
