Release: September 21, 2004, by Reprise Records. The album was produced by Rob Cavallo in collaboration with the group. It was an instant classic.

- It debuted at number one in both the U.S. and the U.K., with first-week sales of 267,000 and 89,385 copies respectively.
- It was the band's first U.S. number-one album and their highest opening sales week.
- The album became the fourth-best-selling album of 2005 in the U.S., with over 3.4 million units sold that year alone.
- American Idiot spent over a year in the Billboard 200's top 10 and remained on the chart for 101 weeks total.
- It achieved six-times platinum certification in both the U.S. and Australia, and diamond certification in Canada.
- As of August 2024, it has sold 23 million copies worldwide.
The good and bad news is that this album is as prescient as ever. A must have for any rock/punk fan or anyone interested in the history of art as a form of protest.
